Daniel in the Lions' Den

Read together in your Bible: Daniel 6 (King James Version)

Daniel kneels in prayer, calm and unharmed among the sleeping lions

Daniel was a faithful man who served God in a faraway land. Three times every day, Daniel knelt by his window and prayed to God — and everybody knew it, because Daniel was not ashamed to be seen praying.

Some wicked men were jealous of Daniel. They tricked the king into making a law that no one could pray to anyone except the king himself. Anyone who broke the law would be thrown into a den of hungry lions!

Daniel heard about the law. Did he stop praying? No! Daniel went home, opened his windows, and prayed to God three times a day, just as he always had. Daniel trusted God more than he feared any law or any lion.

The king was very sad, but the law could not be changed, so Daniel was thrown into the lions' den, and a great stone was rolled over the opening. The king could not sleep all night. Early in the morning he ran to the den and cried out, asking if Daniel's God had been able to save him.

And Daniel answered from the dark den — he was alive and not hurt at all! “My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.” God had shut the lions' mouths. What a mighty God Daniel served — and He is our God too.
