The Story
Moses had grown up in Pharaoh's palace in Egypt, but he had to run away, and now he lived far off in the land of Midian. There he had married, raised a family, and worked as a shepherd, looking after the sheep of his father-in-law, Jethro.
One day Moses led the flock to the far side of the desert, to Horeb, the mountain of God. And there he saw the strangest sight. A bush was burning with bright flames — the Bible says, "the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed". The fire blazed and crackled, but the leaves did not wither and the branches did not fall. Moses decided to go closer and find out why the bush was not burnt up.
Then God called to him out of the middle of the bush: "Moses, Moses." Moses answered, "Here am I."
God told him not to come any closer, but to "put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground". Moses took off his shoes at once, for he was standing before the holy God. God told him that He was the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
Then God told Moses the wonderful news. God had seen how cruelly His people were treated in Egypt. He had heard their crying, and He was coming down to rescue them and bring them into a good, wide land. And God had chosen Moses to lead them out! He would send Moses to Pharaoh, to bring His people out of Egypt.
Moses felt very small. "Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh", he asked — who am I, that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? But God gave him the promise in our memory verse: God Himself would be with him, and one day God's people would worship on this very mountain.
Moses asked what he should say if the people asked for God's name. God answered, "I AM THAT I AM" — the God who always is, who always was, and who always will be. Tell them, God said, that I AM has sent you.
Moses had a big, frightening job to do. But he would not do it alone, because the great I AM was going with him — and God always keeps His promises.
