The Fivefold Vision
The fivefold vision at this university’s heart — and, woven into it, why we preach in the open air and the vision that sends us.
The Fivefold Vision
1. A Vision of God
Every true preacher begins where Isaiah began: in the temple, in the year of a king’s death, seeing a greater King who never dies. Isaiah saw the LORD “ sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, ” and heard the seraphims cry one to another of His holiness. Men preach small because they have seen God small. The street preacher who has had a vision of God preaches big — because God is big.
And the vision does what no training alone can do: it undoes the preacher before it uses him. Isaiah did not first say, “Here am I, send me” — he first cried, “Woe is me!” A man who has seen his own unclean lips against the holiness of God will never preach in pride, never preach for applause, and never preach another man’s message. He preaches as one who has stood before the King.
"In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the LORD sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple."— Isaiah 6:1
"And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory."— Isaiah 6:3
"Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."— Isaiah 6:5
2. A Vision of Calvary
Take away Calvary and there is nothing left to preach. The open-air preacher does not offer the crowd a better life, a cleaner habit, or a kinder philosophy — he offers them a crucified Christ. On that cross the LORD laid on His Son the iniquity of us all: every lie, every lust, every blasphemy that the crowd on the pavement has ever committed was charged to Him, and He bore it in His own body.
That is why Paul — who had learning, standing, and religion enough to glory in — would glory in nothing else. A vision of Calvary settles the preacher’s message forever: Christ died for sinners, for ALL sinners, and whosoever will may come. We do not preach ourselves, our church, or our university in the open air. We preach Christ crucified.
"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world."— Galatians 6:14
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."— Isaiah 53:5
"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all."— Isaiah 53:6
3. A Vision of Eternity
Every face in the crowd will outlive the sun. The young man laughing at the preacher, the woman hurrying past with her shopping, the old man on the bench — every one of them is an eternal soul, and every one of them will spend eternity somewhere. A vision of eternity is what turns a pleasant religious talk into a rescue. There is no small preaching when forever hangs in the balance.
Eternity also steadies the preacher himself. The reproach of an afternoon is temporal; the crown is eternal. We look not at the things which are seen — the empty hands, the hard faces, the arrest, the rain — but at the things which are not seen: a city whose builder and maker is God, and souls snatched from an eternal fire. That is the arithmetic of the open air, and it always comes out in favour of preaching.
"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."— 2 Corinthians 4:18
4. A Vision of Our High Calling
Paul counted his pedigree, his zeal, and his blameless legal righteousness as loss — dung, he called it — beside the excellency of the knowledge of Christ. A man with a vision of his high calling does the same with his comfort, his reputation, and his weekends. The calling is HIGH: it comes from God, it is in Christ Jesus, and its prize is set before us at the end of the race.
And a high calling is a pressing calling. The apostle did not drift toward the mark; he pressed. He forgot the failures behind him — the sermons nobody heeded, the ground that stayed hard — and reached forth unto the work before him. That is the spirit this university trains into its preachers: not men waiting to feel ready, but men who have heard a call too high to negotiate with.
"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,"— Philippians 3:13
"I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."— Philippians 3:14
5. A Vision of the Lost
The last of the five visions is the one that walks out the door. When Jesus saw the multitudes, He did not see an audience, a market, or a nuisance — He saw sheep without a shepherd, and He was MOVED. Compassion is the engine of open-air preaching. Doctrine tells the preacher what to say; a vision of the lost tells him he cannot possibly keep it to himself.
And the seeking Saviour defines the seeking preacher. Christ did not wait in heaven for the lost to find Him; He came. He did not wait in the temple for Zacchaeus; He went to Jericho. The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost — and His servants go where He went: into the highways and hedges, the markets and the fairgrounds, to seek the same lost souls for the same Saviour.
"But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd."— Matthew 9:36
"For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost."— Luke 19:10
Why We Preach in the Open Air — and Why This University Trains Preachers
1. It Is the Lord's Command
The risen Christ's marching orders to His church were not a suggestion for the willing few. The gospel is to be preached to every creature — and creatures are found in the streets, the markets, and the fairgrounds, not only in pews:
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."— Mark 16:15
2. It Is the Pattern of Christ and His Apostles
The Lord Jesus Himself preached from town to town in the open, and Paul could say at the end of his ministry that he had taught “publickly, and from house to house.” Open-air preaching is no modern stunt; it is the Bible's own method:
"And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,"— Luke 8:1
"And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,"— Acts 20:20
3. It Reaches the Ones Who Will Never Come Inside
Most of the lost will never darken a church door. If the message waits inside a building, they will never hear it — so the servant is sent out to where they are:
"And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled."— Luke 14:23
4. No Man Can Believe What He Has Never Heard
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing requires a preacher. Every soul ever saved under preaching was saved because somebody stood up and opened his mouth:
"How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?"— Romans 10:14
5. Preachers Are Equipped, Not Born — and Equipping Them Is This University's Work
God gave evangelists and teachers “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry.” Grace Team University exists to put the whole Bible into a preacher's hands and heart, so that he can obey the standing charge laid on every man God calls:
"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:"— Ephesians 4:11–12
"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."— 2 Timothy 4:2
The Vision of Grace Team University
Grace Team University exists for one reason: the lost are perishing and the church is starving — and both for the same cause: the Word of God is not being taught.
Men are dying in their sins without ever hearing the gospel preached plain. Professing Christians sit in pews for years and cannot rightly divide the Scriptures they claim to believe. God said it first: 'My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge' (Hosea 4:6, KJV).
This university is our answer. We teach the whole Bible — every book, every chapter, verse by verse — from the King James Bible, free to any soul with ears to hear. No tuition. No watered-down gospel. No entertainment dressed as worship. Sound doctrine, taught straight, with an exam at the end of every teaching, because the Word deserves to be learned, not skimmed.
And we do not stop at teaching. The same gospel we teach here, we preach in the open air — preaching to the lost at any cost. If this school makes you comfortable, it has failed. It is meant to equip you, convict you, and send you: to your family, to your street, to the highways and hedges — 'compel them to come in, that my house may be filled' (Luke 14:23, KJV).
Study to shew thyself approved unto God. Then go preach.
The Command
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."— Mark 16:15
"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine."— 2 Timothy 4:2
"When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand."— Ezekiel 33:8
"How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?"— Romans 10:14
"And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh."— Jude 1:23
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."— Romans 1:16
The Calling Quotes
The voices that drive us — the saints of God whose words about saving the lost will not let this university sit still.
"Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you're not saved yourself, be sure of that."
"I look upon this world as a wrecked vessel. God has given me a lifeboat and said, 'Moody, save all you can.'"
"Some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell."
"The world is not waiting for a new definition of Christianity; it is waiting for a new demonstration of Christianity."
