God's Special Tent

Read together in your Bible: Exodus 25; 35–40 (King James Version)

Memory Verse — Hide It in Your Heart
“And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.”
Exodus 25:8 · KJV

Say it together morning and night until you know it by heart — these are the very words of God.

The Story

God wanted to live right among His people. On the mountain He showed Moses the pattern — the exact plan — for a special tent called the tabernacle, and He gave the command in our memory verse: let them make Him a sanctuary, so that He might dwell among them. Every curtain, every piece of furniture, every golden ring had its place in God's plan.

When Moses came down, he gathered all the people together and told them God's command: "whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it". Everyone who wanted to could bring an offering for God's tent: gold and silver and brass, blue and purple and scarlet thread, fine white linen and goats' hair, dyed skins, sweet oil and spices, and shining precious stones.

And how the people came! "every one whose heart stirred him up" brought something — men and women together. Women spun thread with their own hands. People brought brooches and earrings and rings, all of it gold. The rulers brought precious stones and spices and oil. Morning after morning they kept coming, until one day the workmen came to Moses with amazing news: "The people bring much more than enough"! Moses had to send a message through the whole camp telling the people to stop giving — there was already more than enough to build everything God had commanded. Has that ever happened anywhere else?

God gave two men, Bezalel and Oholiab, a special gift: He filled them with His Spirit, with wisdom and skill to work in gold and silver and brass, to cut stones, to carve wood, and to weave beautiful cloth. Under their hands the tabernacle grew: ten curtains joined together and a covering of skins, the golden ark with two angels on its lid, the table, the lampstand of pure gold with seven lamps, the altars, the big basin, the fence of curtains around the courtyard, and beautiful robes for Aaron and his sons, the priests.

At last everything was finished, exactly as God had commanded, and Moses set it all up. Then a cloud covered the tent, and "the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle" — God had come to live among His people, just as He promised. From that day, whenever the cloud lifted, the people packed up and travelled; whenever the cloud stayed, they stayed — with God living right in the middle of their camp.

The Big Truth

God wanted to live among His people, so they built Him a beautiful tent.

What We Learn

  1. God wanted to live among His people — He still wants to be near us, every single day.
  2. God's people gave with willing hearts until there was more than enough — God loves cheerful, generous giving.
  3. The beautiful tent pointed forward to Jesus: in Him, God came to live among us for real.

Talk About It

  1. Why did God want a special tent? Where did He want to live?
  2. What sorts of things did the people bring, and why do you think they brought so much that Moses had to tell them to stop?
  3. What can you give to God with a willing heart — your time, your help, your songs, your kindness?

Fun to Do

Build a Paper Tabernacle! Use a shoebox for the tent: cover the outside with colourful paper curtains, make a small golden ark from a little box covered in gold paper with two paper angels on the lid, and stand a paper lampstand beside it. Set it where your family can see it, and remember: God lives with His people.

Let’s Pray

Dear God, thank You for wanting to be near me. Give me a willing heart to bring You my best, and live with me every day. Amen.
