The Kings of Israel and Judah
Amon
Judah · 642 – 640 BC · 2 years · 2 Kings 21:19 – 26; 2 Chronicles 33:21 – 25
His Story
Manasseh’s son, twenty-two at his accession, whose whole reign is six verses and one verb repeated: he served his father’s idols — all of them, the carved images of Manasseh’s worst years.
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
He repeated the first half of his father’s life and skipped the second: “he humbled not himself before the LORD, as Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon trespassed more and more” (2 Chronicles 33:23).
The Good He Did
Scripture records none.
The LORD’s verdict
“And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father Manasseh did.”2 Kings 21:20 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
His servants conspired and slew him in his own house after two years; the people of the land then executed the conspirators and crowned his eight-year-old son Josiah.
Lessons for Believers Today
- The most dangerous inheritance is a father’s sin without a father’s repentance. Amon heard the Manasseh story from the man himself — and chose only the first half.
- Two years is long enough to refuse mercy. The door that stood open for Manasseh in Babylon stood open in Jerusalem too.
