Jehoahaz (of Judah)
Judah · 609 BC · 3 months · 2 Kings 23:31 – 34; 2 Chronicles 36:1 – 4
His Story
Josiah’s son, chosen by the people over his elder brother at their father’s death — a twenty-three-year-old king for one season. Pharaoh-nechoh, fresh from Megiddo, summoned him to Riblah, deposed him, laid Judah under tribute, and carried him in chains to Egypt.
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
He “did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done” — in three months, the verdict of the kings of the falling house.
The Good He Did
Scripture records none; the people’s choice of him over his brother hints at a popular confidence the record does not explain.
The LORD’s verdict
“And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.”2 Kings 23:32 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
He died in Egypt, the first king of Judah to die in exile — Jeremiah’s “Shallum” (Jeremiah 22:11 – 12), who would “see this land no more.”
Lessons for Believers Today
- Three months is a whole life to God: the ledger records a verdict for a season most historians would skip.
- A godly father’s crown is not hereditary grace: Josiah’s sons all chose the other road. Each generation must find the Book for itself.
