Jehu
Israel · 841 – 814 BC · 28 years · 2 Kings 9 – 10
His Story
A captain anointed in secret by Elisha’s messenger with a commission to destroy the house of Ahab. He drove furiously to Jezreel, killed two kings in a day, saw Jezebel thrown from the window, exterminated Ahab’s seventy sons and all the prophets of Baal by a masterful deception — “Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD.”
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
His zeal stopped exactly where his interest began: “Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam” — the golden calves stayed. And his purge ran with a cruelty and guile that God later reckoned with: “I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu” (Hosea 1:4) — the judgments he executed in God’s name he had also enjoyed for his own.
The Good He Did
God Himself commended the work: “Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes… thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel” (2 Kings 10:30). He broke Baal’s power in Israel permanently — Baal never recovered his throne there.
The LORD’s verdict
“But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.”2 Kings 10:31 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
Jehu reigned 28 years — Israel’s longest northern dynasty began with him — but already in his days “the LORD began to cut Israel short” by Hazael of Syria, because the king who had purged Baal would not serve the LORD.
Lessons for Believers Today
- Zeal for God’s judgments on others is not the same as obedience in our own walk. Finish the reformation — the calves in your own life.
- Motives matter to God: the same sword can serve His commission and feed a man’s ambition, and He weighs both.
