Tibni
Israel · c. 885 – 880 BC · rival king (about 4–5 years of civil war) · 1 Kings 16:21 – 22
His Story
When Zimri’s week ended, Israel split in two: half the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king, and half followed Omri the commander of the army. For several years the northern kingdom had two rival kings and one civil war.
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
Scripture gives Tibni no personal verdict — he stands in the record as the face of a divided, leaderless nation in the days when Israel had left God’s order entirely and every faction made its own king.
The Good He Did
Scripture records none; nothing of his reign survives but the fact of the division itself.
The record
“But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.”1 Kings 16:22 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
“The people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned” — the whole of his obituary.
Lessons for Believers Today
- A nation — or a church — that makes its own kings by faction will have war in the gates. Unity cannot be built on ambition.
- Some men are remembered only for the strife they caused; let your name be remembered for peace.
