Two Witnesses

A theme of Scripture is named, and two verses stand side by side as its witnesses. One truly testifies to the theme; the other is a stranger — a true verse, but hung in the Key Bank under another key, and it does not carry this theme. Name the true witness. “…in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.” — Matthew 18:16

Babes and Sucklings

Beloved themes — Heaven, Prayer, Love, Faith — and the stranger comes from a far country, testifying to something else entirely. Light and easy, for the youngest soldiers: learn to know a true witness by its testimony.

Novices

The standard themes of the preacher’s working vocabulary — the Door, the Kingdom of God, the Wrath of God — and the stranger is drawn from a different topic altogether. A substantial step up: the verses stand nearer now, and you must listen to what each one actually says.

Ministers

Working themes, and the stranger stands in the same neighbourhood — drawn from a key right beside the one named. You must know the testimony itself, not just the country it comes from.

Masters

Fine-grained themes, and the stranger is a near neighbour, often out of the very same book — judgment and wrath and vengeance wearing one another’s coats. Rather difficult: only the words themselves will tell you which witness is true.

Hey Moses

Another scale entirely. The most particular keys in the bank, and the stranger breathes the same air — same family, same book, sometimes the same chapter — yet it does not testify to this theme. Even famous verses will try to claim a theme they do not carry. Name the true witness.
