The Life of Jesus — A Timeline
The earthly life of the Lord Jesus Christ in order — from Bethlehem to the Mount of Olives. For the four accounts woven verse by verse, see the Harmony of the Gospels.
The angel and the manger
Gabriel announces; the Word is made flesh; born of the virgin in David’s city, laid in a manger, announced to shepherds.
The wise men and Egypt
Magi worship Him; Herod rages; Joseph flees to Egypt and returns to Nazareth after Herod’s death.
The boy in the Temple
Found among the doctors, “about my Father’s business”; then eighteen silent years of obedience at Nazareth.
The baptism
John baptizes Him; the Spirit descends like a dove; the Father speaks from heaven. Forty days of temptation follow in the wilderness.
The Galilean ministry
Disciples called at the sea; the miracle at Cana; Nicodemus by night; the woman at the well; the Sermon on the Mount; the sick healed and the dead raised in village after village.
The confession and the glory
“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Days later the Transfiguration shows His glory to Peter, James, and John.
The last journey south
Through Samaria and Perea toward Jerusalem, teaching as He goes; Lazarus raised at Bethany after four days in the grave.
The triumphal entry
Into Jerusalem on the colt amid “Hosanna”; the Temple cleansed a second time; parables and woes against hypocrisy.
The upper room
The Passover kept; feet washed; the Lord’s Supper instituted; the great farewell teaching and the high-priestly prayer.
Gethsemane and the cross
Agony in the garden, betrayal with a kiss, trials before priests and Pilate — and crucifixion: “It is finished.” Buried in Joseph’s new tomb before sundown.
The resurrection
The stone rolled away; the tomb empty; He appears to Mary Magdalene, to the ten, to Thomas, to the five hundred — alive for evermore.
The ascension
The Great Commission given; He blesses them and is carried up; two angels promise: “this same Jesus… shall so come in like manner.”
