2 Maccabees

A separate volume — not canonical Scripture

← All fourteen books

A more embroidered telling of the same revolt, with apparitions, martyrdoms (the mother and her seven sons, ch. 7), and explicit doctrines the Bible denies: prayers and a sin-offering for dead idolaters (12:43–45 — the seed-text of purgatory and masses for the dead) and the intercession of dead saints (15:14). Its author closes by hoping his work is merely 'pleasant' reading (15:38–39) — the church should take him at his word and keep it out of the canon.
