The Story
When God made people, He made us different from all the animals. The Bible says, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Being made in God’s image means we can know God, love Him, think, choose, speak, and care for the world He made. God gave Adam and Eve good work: to look after the earth and the creatures in it.
God formed Adam from the dust of the ground, and He "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life". God placed Adam in a beautiful garden called Eden. There were trees that were pleasant to see and good for food, and a river watered the garden. Adam had work to do, looking after the garden. Adam had a mind to think, a mouth to speak, hands to work, and a heart that could know and love God. God also gave one clear command: Adam could eat from the trees of the garden, but he must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Then God saw something that needed a helper. The Bible tells us what God said: "It is not good that the man should be alone". God brought the animals to Adam, and Adam gave names to the cattle, the birds, and the beasts of the field. But among all the animals there was no helper just right for Adam.
So God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam. While Adam slept, God took one of his ribs and made a woman. Then God brought her to Adam, and Adam knew she was God’s gift for him. Her name was Eve. Adam and Eve were husband and wife, and they lived together in God’s good garden.
People are still God’s wonderful creation. He made boys and girls, mums and dads, grandmas and grandpas — every person different, and every person made by Him on purpose. He made your eyes and ears, your mind and heart. Most of all, He made you so you can know Him and love Him. That is why every person matters, and why you matter so much to God.
