Ahaziah (of Judah)
Judah · 841 BC · 1 year · 2 Kings 8:25 – 9:28; 2 Chronicles 22:1 – 9
His Story
Jehoram and Athaliah’s youngest son — the elder brothers had been carried off by Arab raiders — made king at twenty-two because “the people of Jerusalem” had no one else of David’s line near the throne. His one year is spent in his mother’s orbit and his uncle Joram’s war.
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
His counselors were the house of Ahab, “and his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly” (2 Chronicles 22:3). He joined the Syrian war at Ramoth-gilead, visited the wounded Joram at Jezreel — the visit that placed him in the path of Jehu’s commission.
The Good He Did
Scripture records none; he is the product of two houses’ sins meeting in one short life.
The LORD’s verdict
“And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the house of Ahab: for he was the son in law of the house of Ahab.”2 Kings 8:27 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
Caught at Samaria in hiding and brought to Jehu, he was executed as one of Ahab’s house; yet Jehu ordered him buried honorably in Jerusalem “because he is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart” (2 Chronicles 22:9).
Lessons for Believers Today
- A mother’s counsel is a throne-room power: Athaliah’s son reigned by her religion and died by her alliances. Godly mothers (and fathers) are a nation’s first defense.
- Even in judgment, God remembered Jehoshaphat’s heart in his grandson’s burial — faithfulness leaves mercies behind for children we will never see.
