Athaliah
Judah · 841 – 835 BC · 6 years · 2 Kings 11; 2 Chronicles 22:10 – 23:21
His Story
Daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, widow of Jehoram, mother of Ahaziah — and the only woman to seize the throne of Judah. When Jehu’s purge killed her son, she moved to exterminate the royal seed itself, murdering her own grandsons, and reigned six years over a silenced city while Baal’s temple stood in Jerusalem. She missed one child: the infant Joash, hidden by his aunt Jehosheba in the house of the LORD for six years.
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
Child-murder of her own house to secure power; the enthronement of Baal-worship in Judah; and the plundering of God’s house — “the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim” (2 Chronicles 24:7).
The Good He Did
Scripture records none — she is the New Testament’s picture of Jezebel’s spirit enthroned (Revelation 2:20 echoes the name’s infamy); even her survival of Jehu’s purge became only an opportunity for worse.
The LORD’s verdict
“For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim.”2 Chronicles 24:7 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
In the seventh year the priest Jehoiada crowned the seven-year-old Joash in the Temple; Athaliah, hearing the trumpets and the shouting, ran in crying “Treason, treason!” — and was taken outside the Temple precincts and slain at the horse gate of the palace.
Lessons for Believers Today
- God’s covenant cannot be murdered out of existence: one hidden baby in the Temple outlasted a queen’s whole purge — “the promise of David” slept in a nursery.
- Courage has an address: Jehoiada and Jehosheba risked everything quietly for years before one public day. Long, hidden faithfulness defeats loud wickedness.
