Menahem
Israel · 752 – 742 BC · 10 years · 2 Kings 15:16 – 22
His Story
A usurper of exceptional brutality: because Tiphsah would not open its gates to him, he sacked it with atrocities Scripture names without flinching. When Pul of Assyria invaded, Menahem bought him off with a thousand talents of silver squeezed from Israel’s wealthy men — fifty shekels a head — and purchased his throne as Assyria’s vassal.
His Sin — How He Displeased the LORD
He did evil and departed not from Jeroboam’s sins all his days; and he added cruelty to his own subjects and cowardice before a foreign power, teaching Israel to buy safety instead of seeking God.
The Good He Did
Scripture records none.
The LORD’s verdict
“And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.”2 Kings 15:18 (KJV)
How His Reign Ended
He died in his bed — unusually for his era — and his son Pekahiah succeeded him; the tribute he normalized became the chain by which Assyria would drag the kingdom away.
Lessons for Believers Today
- Safety bought at the price of righteousness is the most expensive purchase a nation can make; the tribute always comes due.
- Cruelty to the weak and servility to the strong are the same character seen from two sides.
