Who Is Jesus Christ?

It is the most important question a man will ever answer. The Lord Jesus put it to His own disciples — “But whom say ye that I am?” — and every soul since has had to answer it. This page lets the Scriptures answer: who He is, what He is called, and what He has done.

The Question

“He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?” — Matthew 16:15

Who He Is — God the Son, from Everlasting

Jesus Christ did not begin at Bethlehem. He is the eternal Word — with God, and God Himself — who was made flesh and dwelt among us. The Father calls Him God; His goings forth are from everlasting; by Him all things were created; and in Him the great mystery of godliness stands revealed: God manifest in the flesh.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14
“But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.” — Hebrews 1:8
“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” — Micah 5:2
“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:” — Colossians 1:16
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” — 1 Timothy 3:16

His Names

Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace

Five names in one prophecy — a child born, a Son given, and every name a name of God.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6

Immanuel

God with us — the virgin-born Son, promised seven centuries before Bethlehem.

“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” — Isaiah 7:14

THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

The righteousness that sinners cannot earn, He is.

“In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” — Jeremiah 23:6

The Lamb of God

The sacrifice that taketh away the sin of the world.

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” — John 1:29

The Good Shepherd

He giveth His life for the sheep.

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” — John 10:11

The Bread of Life

He that cometh to Him shall never hunger; he that believeth on Him shall never thirst.

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” — John 6:35

The Light of the World

Follow Him, and thou shalt not walk in darkness.

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” — John 8:12

The Resurrection and the Life

Believe on Him, and death is not the end of thee.

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:” — John 11:25

The Way, the Truth, and the Life

No man cometh unto the Father, but by Him.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6

Alpha and Omega

The beginning and the ending — the Almighty.

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” — Revelation 1:8

KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS

The name written on His vesture when He returns in glory.

“And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” — Revelation 19:16

His Work

He Came to Seek and to Save the Lost

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” — Luke 19:10

He Died for Our Sins

Seven centuries before the cross, Isaiah saw it: the sinless One wounded for the transgressions of others. And God commended His love toward us in the very act — Christ died for us while we were yet sinners, not after we cleaned ourselves up.

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

He Rose Again the Third Day

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;” — 1 Corinthians 15:3
“And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” — 1 Corinthians 15:4

He Ever Liveth to Make Intercession

Ascended into heaven, He has not retired from His people: He ever liveth to plead for them, and is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him.

“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” — Hebrews 7:25

He Shall So Come Again

“Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” — Acts 1:11

What He Asks of You

Not religion, not reformation, not a fee. He asks thee to believe on Him — and promises everlasting life to whosoever doeth it:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” — Romans 10:9
“And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” — Acts 16:31
