Before he was Paul, he was Saul — a man who hated the Christians and tried to stop them from telling anyone about Jesus. One day, Saul was travelling to the city of Damascus to arrest Christians there.
Suddenly, a bright light from heaven shone all around him, and Saul fell to the ground! A voice spoke from heaven: "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" It was Jesus Himself, speaking to Saul. Trembling, Saul answered, “And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”
Saul's heart was completely changed. He believed in Jesus, he was baptized, and he began to preach that Jesus is the Son of God — the very thing he had tried to stop! From then on, people called him Paul, and he spent the rest of his life travelling from city to city and country to country, telling everyone about Jesus.
Sometimes Paul was put in prison for preaching. One night in the city of Philippi, Paul and his friend Silas were in prison with their feet locked in stocks — and at midnight they prayed and sang praises to God! God sent an earthquake that shook the prison doors open. The jailer was terrified, and he asked Paul the most important question of all: "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"
Paul's answer is for every one of us: “And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.” The jailer believed, his whole household believed, and they were baptized that very night. The man who once tried to stop the gospel became the man who told the whole world — and the same Jesus who changed Paul can change you, too.
