Answering the Skeptic
The questions skeptics actually raise on the street — answered plainly, from Scripture, in the time it takes to say them out loud. These are quick answers, not courses: tap a question, get the answer a street preacher can give in under a minute, and the King James verse it stands on. Below them, two studies: a short study on creation — the age of the earth, the expanding universe, and the scientific answers to atheism — and the witnesses outside the Bible, what the ancient world itself said about Jesus.
Quick Answers — Say It in Under a Minute
1. The Bible is just man-made — men wrote it to control people.
Men held the pens, but they were not the authors. The Bible's writers say plainly they spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost — which is why some forty men across fifteen centuries, who mostly never met, produced one book with one message. And a man-made book flatters man; this one condemns us all and points us to a Saviour. That is not how men write about themselves.
“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” — 2 Peter 1:21
2. If God made everything, who made God?
Nobody — and the question answers itself once you hear it. Everything that begins needs a cause; God never began. He is the one eternal, self-existing Being: before the mountains were brought forth, from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Asking who made God is like asking who wrote the author. Every chain of causes stops at One who simply is — and the Bible names Him.
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” — Psalm 90:2
3. Science has disproved the Bible.
Science describes how God's world works; it cannot disprove the One who made it — it studies His handiwork. Every law of nature science discovers is a law God authored and upholds, and the more of creation we uncover, the more glory it declares. Where science sticks to what it can measure, it has never once contradicted what Scripture actually says. The conflicts come from men misreading one book or the other — sometimes both.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” — Psalm 19:1
4. Why does God allow suffering and evil, if He is good and all-powerful?
Because He made men free, not puppets — and free men rebelled, and a groaning creation is the result. But God has not left suffering meaningless or final: He entered it Himself at the cross, He is working every thread of it — for those who love Him — toward a good end, and He will one day wipe every tear away for good. The problem of evil is real. It is also answered — in a Person.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28
5. All religions are basically the same — many paths up one mountain.
They cannot all be true, because they contradict each other at the centre. Other religions make man climb to God by works; the Bible says God came down to man by grace. And Jesus Himself closed the many-paths door with His own mouth: I am the way, the truth, and the life. Either He told the truth, or He is not worth following at all. There is no third option.
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6
6. The church is full of hypocrites — why would I join that?
You are right that hypocrites exist — Jesus rebuked them harder than anyone ever has. But a counterfeit proves the real thing is valuable; nobody counterfeits what is worthless. And notice: the standard you are judging them by is God's own standard. Every man falls short of it — hypocrite and honest sinner alike — which is exactly why every one of us needs a Saviour rather than a membership.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” — Romans 3:23
7. A loving God would never send anyone to hell.
God sends no man to hell who does not choose the road there. He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance — and He proved it by giving His Son. Hell is what a man gets when he refuses, to the very end, the pardon God keeps offering. The love of God is not in question; it is on full display at the cross. The question is whether a man will have it.
“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9
8. Evolution explains life — we don't need Genesis.
Evolution, even taken on its own claims, describes change within living things — it cannot explain the beginning of life, of matter, or of the universe itself. Genesis answers the question science cannot touch: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And as the Creation Study below lays out, the real evidence — an expanding, running-down, finely tuned universe — points to a Beginner, not to an accident.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
9. Miracles are impossible — dead men don't rise.
Miracles are impossible for nature — that is what makes them miracles, and it is no argument at all against the God who made nature. If there is a God who created all things out of nothing, then raising the dead is a small thing for Him. The question is never 'can dead men rise?' but 'is there a God?' Settle that one, and the miracles settle themselves.
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.” — Luke 1:37
10. Jesus never claimed to be God.
He did — plainly, and the men who heard Him understood exactly what He was claiming; that is why they took up stones. Before Abraham was, I am is not the talk of a mere teacher: I AM is the very name God gave Moses at the burning bush. Jesus claimed the name, received worship, forgave sins, and promised to raise the dead. A man who says those things is either God, or no good man at all.
“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.” — John 8:58
11. The Bible is full of contradictions.
Bring one. In centuries of trying, the supposed contradictions have dissolved on inspection — into accounts telling the same event from different sides, copyist slips in trivia, or verses torn out of their context. The Author of this Book is not a man, that He should lie; the disagreements live in careless reading, not in the text. Read any alleged contradiction in its chapter, out loud, and watch it disappear.
“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” — Numbers 23:19
12. How can you be sure God even exists?
Because He has not hidden. The creation itself is evidence on public display — design, order, power, and intelligence visible to any honest eye, in every age. The invisible things of God, Paul says, are clearly seen in the things He has made, so that men are without excuse. Atheism is not a lack of evidence; it is a refusal of it. Step outside on a clear night and try again.
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” — Romans 1:20
13. I'm a good person. That's enough, isn't it?
Good by whose measure? By your neighbour's, perhaps. By God's — the measure that will judge us — none of us is good: our very best deeds, set beside His holiness, come out as filthy rags. That is not an insult; it is the diagnosis that makes sense of the cure. If good people reached heaven by goodness, Christ died for nothing. He did not.
“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” — Isaiah 64:6
14. Eternal hell for a few years of sin is unjust.
Sin's weight is measured by the One it is against. A blow struck at a stranger and a blow struck at a king are the same motion and a very different crime — sin against an eternal, infinite God carries an eternal consequence. And notice: the same sentence of Christ that speaks of everlasting punishment speaks, in the same breath, of life eternal. Refuse the life, and the other is what remains.
“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.” — Matthew 25:46
15. The resurrection was a myth the disciples invented.
Myths are not invented by men who then die for them, one by one, refusing to recant. The risen Christ was seen by above five hundred brethren at once — most of them still alive when Paul wrote it down and invited the checking. The tomb was empty, the witnesses were named, and the church was born in the very city where a produced body would have crushed it. Nobody ever produced one.
“After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.” — 1 Corinthians 15:6
16. Religion is just a crutch for weak people.
Man was made with a broken leg — every one of us limps, whether he admits it or not; the crutch charge only observes that some men lean while others crawl. But Christianity is not finally about comfort; it is about truth — and the truth, Jesus said, sets a man free. The faith that faced lions, scaffolds, and stakes was never an opiate. It is marching orders.
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” — John 8:32
17. Christians are intolerant for saying Jesus is the only way.
It would be arrogant if we had invented it. We did not — we are reporting what Christ Himself claimed, and what the apostles staked their lives on. A doctor who insists on the one medicine that cures is not intolerant; he is honest. The genuinely intolerant position is demanding that we call a lie true in order to spare somebody's feelings.
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” — Acts 4:12
18. If God wants me to believe, why doesn't He just prove Himself — appear, do a sign?
He did appear — in the flesh, for thirty-three years, working signs in public — and men crucified Him anyway. Signs never produced faith; they produced demands for more signs. God now gives the evidence He has chosen: a risen Christ attested in Scripture, and He blesses the faith that believes on that testimony. Thomas saw and believed; the greater blessing rests on those who believe the record.
“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” — John 20:29
19. The Bible is immoral — it condones slavery and worse.
Read what it actually says. Manstealing — the kidnapping of human beings for the trade — is listed in the New Testament among the sins contrary to sound doctrine, in the company of murderers and liars. The Bible speaks into a hard world it did not create, and plants the very principles that strangle the evils men blame it for. Judge the Book by its own words, not by slogans about it.
“For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;” — 1 Timothy 1:10
20. The Bible has been copied and translated so many times it can't be trusted.
The manuscript evidence for the New Testament dwarfs that of every other ancient book — thousands of copies, from within living memory of the events, agreeing in everything that matters. And God promised His word would stand when grass withered and flowers faded. Translation was not a game of telephone; it was careful work from the Hebrew and Greek — and the result sits open for you to test today.
“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” — Isaiah 40:8
21. What about people who never heard of Jesus? Is it fair to judge them?
God judges every man by the light he actually has. No man will be condemned for rejecting a Christ he never heard of — but every man is accountable for the Creator he can see in creation, and for the conscience he carries within. And God now commandeth all men every where to repent — which is exactly why we preach in the open air: so that fewer men can say they never heard.
“And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:” — Acts 17:30
22. There's no such thing as absolute truth — what's true for you isn't true for me.
That statement claims to be absolutely true — it refutes itself before it leaves the mouth. Reality does not bend to preference: gravity is true for the man who denies it, and so is judgment. Jesus prayed, Thy word is truth — not a truth, not His truth: truth. A man may shut his eyes to it, but he will meet it.
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” — John 17:17
23. Faith is blind — the opposite of thinking.
God's own invitation is, Come now, and let us reason together. Biblical faith is not a leap in the dark; it is trust built on evidence — fulfilled prophecy, an empty tomb, and a Book that has survived every audit men have run on it. The Bereans were commended for searching the Scriptures daily to check what they heard. Bring your mind with you; this faith can stand the examination.
“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” — Isaiah 1:18
24. Why did God command wars and judgments in the Old Testament?
Because He is a judge — and the nations judged had filled up centuries of wickedness, child sacrifice and worse, while God waited with a patience no earthly court would show: the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full, He said, and waited generations more. Judgment delayed is mercy; judgment finally executed is justice. And the God who judged then will judge this age — which is why the warning is worth hearing now.
“But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.” — Genesis 15:16
25. If God cared, He wouldn't let people suffer like this.
He does care — and the proof is that He is nigh, near, to them that are of a broken heart; not distant from them. Suffering is the common lot of a fallen world, saint and sinner alike; the difference is that the believer does not suffer alone, and does not suffer without hope. The God of the Bible does not watch pain from a balcony. He carried a cross into the middle of it.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
26. I'll get to heaven my own way — all sincere paths lead to God.
Sincerity is not the test: a man can be sincerely wrong about a cliff edge. Scripture warns of a way which seemeth right unto a man, whose end is death. God has marked one way — through the death and resurrection of His Son — and the kindness of it is that the way stands open to whosoever will take it. But it is His way, or none.
“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” — Proverbs 14:12
A Study on Creation — The Old Earth, and the God Who Began It All
Ask about creation on any street corner and the room divides into two camps, both certain the Bible has picked a side it never picked. One camp insists the earth is a few thousand years old and treats Genesis as a stopwatch; the other insists science has buried the Creator altogether. Grace Team University teaches neither. Here is the position of this school, stated plainly: the earth really is old; Scripture nowhere tells us when God created it; and the best-established facts of science, honestly faced, point away from atheism and straight at a Beginner.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” — Hebrews 11:3
1. The Earth Really Is Old
Nothing in Scripture calls the earth young. When God answered Job out of the whirlwind, He spoke of foundations laid long ages before any man could measure them — and asked where Job had been standing at the time. The honest reading of the ground beneath us agrees: rock, ice, light from distant stars, and the slow work of rivers all testify to a creation of great age. We receive that testimony without embarrassment. An old earth does not age its Maker, who was God before the mountains were brought forth:
“Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.” — Job 38:4
“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” — Psalm 90:2
2. We Do Not Know When God Created the Earth
Search the Bible from Genesis to Revelation for a date of creation and you will not find one. No prophet, apostle, or verse of Scripture says, “In such a year God made the world.” Any date a man gives you for creation is his arithmetic, not God's revelation — and the difference matters, because we are commanded to preach what God has spoken, not what men have calculated. Some things God has simply kept in His own hand:
“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.” — Deuteronomy 29:29
3. Genealogies Cannot Date the Earth
The famous dates for creation — 4004 BC and its cousins — were built by adding up the ages in the genealogies of Genesis 5 and 11. But those lists were given to trace lineage — who descended from whom, and how the promise travelled from Adam to Abraham — not to serve as a creation clock. In Scripture's own usage, “begat” can span generations, and the lists are selective by design: Matthew's genealogy of Christ arranges its names in three deliberate fourteens, passing over kings without apology. A family tree is not a stopwatch, and squeezing a date for the universe out of one is using the text for something it was never given to do. Paul even warns the church off building doctrine on endless genealogies:
“Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.” — 1 Timothy 1:4
4. The Universe Is Expanding — Therefore It Had a Beginning
Astronomers of the last century found the heavens stretching out: every distant galaxy is racing away, the whole universe expanding like the surface of a rising loaf. Run that motion backwards and it gathers, unavoidably, to a beginning — a first moment before which there was no universe at all. Scripture said it first, and said it beautifully: God “stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain.” A beginning is an embarrassment for atheism, because things do not begin themselves. What begins must be begun — a beginning points to a Beginner:
“It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:” — Isaiah 40:22
“Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:” — Psalm 104:2
5. The Universe Is Running Down — Newton's Laws and the Second Law of Thermodynamics
Newton's laws describe a universe of majestic order — motion that persists, force answered by force, a great machine moving by fixed rules. But the second law of thermodynamics adds the direction: entropy — disorder — always increases. Heat spreads and levels out; stars burn their fuel and die; everything ordered runs down toward disorder. A universe that is running down cannot have been running forever, or it would have run down already, long ago, into cold equilibrium. Somebody wound it up. The Bible said that too, in the language of a garment wearing thin:
“They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:” — Psalm 102:26
6. Fine-Tuning and Design
And the universe is not merely old and begun — it is tuned. The force of gravity, the strength that binds the atom, the tilt, water, and distance of this earth: alter any of them by a hair and no life, no chemistry, no stars as we know them could exist. Living things, down to the information written in every cell, bear the marks of mind, not of accident. The heavens declare it; the things that are made leave the skeptic, in Paul's word, without excuse; and a man need look no further than his own fearfully and wonderfully made body:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” — Psalm 19:1
“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:” — Romans 1:20
“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” — Psalm 139:14
The honest sum: the earth is old; its birthday is God's secret, and no man is authorised to announce it; and everything true science has found — a beginning, an expansion, a running down, a design — points one way, the way the first verse of the Bible points: In the beginning, God.
The Witnesses Outside the Bible — What the Ancient World Said About Jesus
“Jesus is a myth the church invented.” The ancient world itself answers that one — and not from the church’s side of the record. Josephus the Jewish historian, Tacitus the Roman senator who despised the faith, Pliny drawing confessions out of tortured deaconesses, Lucian the mocker, Celsus the enemy philosopher, even the rabbis of the Talmud: friends, neutrals, and open enemies all bear witness — to the man, the cross under Pontius Pilate, the darkness at noon, and the followers who would die rather than curse His name. Watch the teaching, then read the full study, with every word quoted and every source named.
